tailored to suite the sole craftsman. This sometimes calls for unconventional
use of conventional techniques. The result has been that with few exceptions
I do all of the work myself.
All of my Damascus billets are made to specification by Daryl Meier. He is
my most valued collaborator and a bit of his skill resides at the heart of
every blade. After we determine what is called for in a particular project
Daryl forge welds the billets. I then rough projects out of these billets
and forge them to shape.
I work inside of a story line. It is of my own devise and establishes parameters
for my work. The result is everything having the appearance of coming from
the same place in time.
The comment is often made that my pieces look "old". If I manage
to successfully replicate those old processes in some measure then they could
not come out otherwise. As soon as buffing compounds, 2200 grit finishing
paper, that "micro fit" stuff, stainless steel and digital calipers
go away things begin to look pre-industrial age, when everything was still
made by people. When craft regularly hit things with hammers to make them
fit!
